Skin Detox – What Is It and How To Start Detoxing

Samantha Tran

The skin is the human body’s largest organ, protecting us from outside elements and regulating our body temperature. Therefore, it is crucial to protect our skin so it can continue to protect us as we get older. That’s why skin detox is important.

An increasingly popular trend on the internet is undergoing skin detox. But what exactly is it, and why is it so popular? First, the definition of ‘detox’ is when an individual stops eating unhealthy or harmful foods and products to improve their overall health.

This means a skin detox changes one’s routine to achieve healthy and flawless skin. Changes in diet and product usage are two of the most common and essential ways to detox the skin and promote a youthful complexion.

What is a skin detox?

You may be wondering, “what exactly is a skin detox?” The most important thing to note is that skin detoxing refers to what you can do to the surface of your skin and your body to protect it from your environment.

A common misconception is that skin detoxification flushes toxins through the skin, but that is impossible. Toxins cannot leave the body through the skin, although one way the skin removes impurities naturally is through acne.

A skin detox can help remove as many impurities, pollutants, and dead skin cells clogging your pores as possible. The most effective way to start is to use the best skin care products for your lifestyle and skin type. In addition, skin detoxification has numerous benefits, including cleansing, brightening, hydrating, and soothing the skin.

Moreover, a skin detox does not limit what you can or cannot incorporate into your skin regimen. Depending on your skin concerns and lifestyle, it can look different for everyone!

As we mentioned, skin detoxing is not limited to what skin care products you use. You can also detox through diet changes, like eating more leafy greens or reducing how much sugar you eat throughout the day.

All things considered, conducting diligent research is essential when looking for products and brands for your skin type and values. These may include clean skincare with healthy organically grown natural ingredients. Additionally, some people prefer switching to vegan skincare, which is another way of detoxing your skin.

3 tips for skin detoxing

The first tip to start your skin detox journey is to begin facial treatments. With facial treatments, you can relax and have a professional esthetician treat and cleanse your skin, or you can do a facial treatment at home. Spa facials, using gua sha tools, or hydrodermabrasion are all examples of facial treatments you can undergo when skin detoxing.

The second tip is to double-cleanse your skin regularly. Double cleansing starts with a cleansing oil first and a water-based cleanser right after. The cleansing oil removes any excess sebum, impurities, and bacteria in the skin, while the water-based cleanser washes everything away.

Thirdly, exfoliate your skin. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and flaky skin from the outer layer of your skin. For best results, limit exfoliating to 1-3 times a week to avoid irritating or creating micro tears in the skin.

Similarly, dry brushing is becoming an increasingly popular form of exfoliation. The difference between exfoliating and dry brushing is that dry brushing does not use water.

Furthermore, some benefits of dry brushing include unclogged pores in the exfoliation process, increased blood circulation and promoting lymph flow and drainage. Much like exfoliating, it is best to limit dry brushing to 1-2 times a week to avoid creating sensitive skin.

Comparatively, gua sha tools and dry brushing are similar as well. Gua sha improves blood circulation in the face and neck and relieves tension in the muscles while dry brushing improves blood circulation in the entire body.

What products are best for a skin detox?

We have talked about different treatments you can undergo when skin detoxing, but what products and ingredients are best for a skin detox?

First, retinol and vitamin C are two ingredients that should be at the top of your skin care list. Plant Mother’s vegan retinol serum is gentle, but effective on the skin.

Containing hydrating and antioxidant-rich ingredients like Bakuchiol and maracuja oil, they stimulate skin cell turnover. Therefore, increasing collagen production and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines while preventing breakouts and creating an even skin texture.

The next best product for a skin detox is vitamin C. Vitamin C’s role is to protect your skin’s barrier against free radicals in the environment like smoke, pollution, and pesticides. Additionally, vitamin C also improves sun damage and stimulates collagen production.

Luckily, Plant Mother’s vitamin C serum is a vegan, non-toxic, and organic oil-based serum. With over 200 nutrients and antioxidants, Plant Mother’s vitamin C serum is the best serum to nourish and protect your skin. It also contains Kakadu plum, containing the highest form of natural vitamin C – 55 times more than oranges!

Alongside vitamin C, niacinamide is a great ingredient that reduces skin redness, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. It also reduces acne and minimizes pores. Choosing the best niacinamide serum is most important. Plant Mother’s vitamin C serum contains natural niacinamide derived from maracuja and rosehip oil – making it packed with multivitamins and nutritious antioxidants.

Therefore, vitamin C, retinol, and niacinamide create the best skincare regimen.

Additional detoxification for the body

Another method of detoxing not only your skin, but your body and mind are chakra stones. There are seven chakras that represent either a physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual state. By using chakra stones, it helps remove any negative blockages in your mind and body, as well as balance your energy within yourself and around you.

Moreover, meditating and balancing your mind is beneficial in enhancing the senses and reducing anxiety and high blood pressure. To achieve the best experience with chakra stones and crystals, it is best to cleanse and introduce positive thoughts as you hold and meditate with them.

Best diet tips for your detox routine

As stated above, changing what you put into your body reflects how your skin looks. A few superfoods you can incorporate into your diet include avocados, spinach, kale, bell peppers, and broccoli. Avocados contain vitamin E, which improves your skin’s barrier, hydration, and protects your skin cells from free radical damage.

Spinach and kale are rich in vitamin K, which improves blood circulation. Additionally, spinach contains zinc, helping to reduce inflammation and help prevents acne and breakouts. Lastly, bell peppers and broccoli are high in vitamin C. Vitamin C helps smooth your skin and lighten hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

Moreover, properly hydrating your skin and body is extremely important. If you are suffering from dehydrated skin, drinking as much water, and hydrating liquids will be beneficial.

As a general rule of thumb, you should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. Even better, adding a moisturizer, face cream, or face serum that nourishes and hydrates into your routine will feed your skin extra nutrients!

Overall, by starting your skin detox journey, your skin and pores become free of impurities, oil, and dirt. You will also start to have a balanced skin tone and texture, and glowing and youthful skin.

Not to mention, anyone can start skin detoxing! A skin detox is not limited by skin type, meaning even those with sensitive or mature skin can detox their skin. Since a skin detox incorporates various aspects of one’s skin and diet lifestyle, you can slowly introduce it into your routine.

Best sunscreen for your daily routine

With skin detoxing, it is essential to protect your skin as much as possible. Always apply sunscreen to protect your skin from skin cancer, aging signs, UV rays, and damaging skin cells.

You should apply sunscreen every day to prevent wrinkles and sun damage to any exposed skin – especially the face. By opting for an environmentally friendly and biodegradable sunscreen, you are protecting your skin and the environment.

In addition, non-toxic and clean sunscreen does not contain ingredients that may be harmful to ecosystems like coral reefs. The best aspects of sunscreen include water resistance, broad-spectrum protection, and at least an SPF of 30 (or more).

Skin detox – myths and facts

With most skin care tips and trends that gain traction on the internet, there are a few myths going around. As we went over above, skin detoxing does not mean you are flushing toxins out of your body through your skin.

  • Sweating – A common belief is that exercising or sitting in a sauna or steam room will help your body sweat out toxins in your body. Our bodies sweat to regulate our body temperatures by cooling the body down. The truth is the only detox organs in your body are the liver and kidneys.

Although, in extreme cases, they may not be able to get rid of certain toxins because the amount is too large. The body then gets rid of the excess toxins through sweat.

  • Skin detox is quick – The next myth or misconception is that skin detox is a quick process. Much like when you start exercising or incorporate a new skincare product, you will not see immediate results.

Generally, skin detoxification takes about 2-3 weeks before you see noticeable results. Although, if you start eating a diet rich in nutrient-dense foods and stick to an effective skincare routine, you may feel more energized quickly!

  • Juice cleansing – Lastly, following diet fads like juicing does not exactly detox the skin. Juicing does contain various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help the skin look younger and glowing. But, juicing fruits and vegetables takes the fiber out of the actual serving of fruit. Therefore, juice cleansing is just drinking fruit sugar, water, and some vitamins and minerals. This means your sugar intake will be high compared to eating a bowl of fruit. To eat foods that are healthy for your body and vitamins, it is best to follow a well-balanced diet.
